“About a week ago, I was given the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and spend some time in front of the camera.

Let us just be clear that I am not comfortable in front of the camera. I’m barely even comfortable behind the camera, but I can fake it pretty well. For me, being in front of the camera is terrifying, especially when I don’t have control over the delete button. I’m stiff and awkward, I don’t know what to do with my arms and legs, and am hyper-critical of my face and body.

In general, I don’t like to look at pictures of myself. It’s not my happy place.

But I’ve wanted to shoot with Rebbecca Peterson of Ambiance Images for a long time now, although, by that, I mostly mean I wanted to wander around

and shoot with her. Not necessarily have my picture taken.

That said, I desperately needed some new, professional branding shots, and so when this shoot materialized, seemingly out of thin air, it seemed serendipitous. I know firsthand that she's incredibly talented, and I strongly believe that anytime a person is given a chance to do something outside their comfort zone, they should gratefully go for it. Branding shoots are a way to showcase your business and/or who you are professionally, and are typically done in your natural work environment, or in a place that inspires you.

This was my first challenge. I really wasn’t comfortable having pictures taken in my home. My home is weird. I barely have furniture. My living room doubles as my weight room.

I do have a very plain office, but my desk is over 12 years old, pitted, cracked, stained, and worn, and my only wall décor is a plain calendar and a glossy framed 8-1/2 by 11 shot of K-9 Joker-looking as fierce as Cujo after you just poked him in the eye with a stick.

On a whim, I asked Rebbecca if she’d be willing to do the shoot in downtown Seattle, at my mom’s condo. The condo is cute, and I’ve found so much peace there lately. I look forward to going and even kind of crave it. I love the neighborhood and figured we could walk around Seattle Center and shoot there too. The fountain, the Space Needle, the monorail, and the Museum of Pop Culture… It all beckoned. I knew that if I bombed in front of the camera, at least we’d have lots of other cool things to take pictures of.

But there was no bombing! Rebbecca is exceptional at her craft!

She is a true professional, makes you feel entirely at ease, and can easily explain exactly how to position yourself for the best possible captures. I finally started remembering to just relax and act natural, and by the end of the day, I was already planning our next shoot! It was the most fun I’ve had in a really long time and I’m so grateful for the whole experience. She’s processed a few of the shots, and so far, this is my favorite.

If you need headshots or have been contemplating a branding shoot for your professional website and social media platforms, I highly recommend Rebbecca! She is truly an expert at what she does. She is skilled, intuitive, innovative, really fun to be around, and had zero qualms about allowing me to be my authentic self. If you feel like a hopeless clod in front of the camera like I do, I promise she’ll coax some great shots out of you!”

“She captures what interests me and that’s the beauty of Washington State that only us Washingtonians know. Lakes, mountains, streams, Puget Sound, sunsets, clouds, the moon, stars, changing of the seasons, places I’ve been to, and places I’d like to visit. Never boring. So many talented photographers in this region but Rebbecca is as good as it gets.”
